How to properly wean your baby

Babies who are eight months or older can be shifted to home-prepared baby foods that have a thicker texture. Baby food can manufacturers in India also produce food cans for adults and usually at this age of the baby the same foods can be used as for adults though in a mashed form. The can ends also are prepared so that they are easy to open by an adult while not being harmful to the baby.

Eating homemade baby food also helps your baby enjoy the same food that is prepared for the rest of the family. The only difference is that while the adult food is in normal portions, the baby food will have to be mashed up. However, some adult foods are not appropriate for them like mixed foods like pizzas or casseroles. The mixed foods might contain items that the baby has not tried before or maybe allergic to as well.

When baby foods are made at home, one should ensure that the food is stored and prepared safely and has a proper texture that makes it easier for the baby to swallow them. One should also ensure that such cooking methods are used that conserve nutrients as much as possible and not add unnecessary ingredients like sugars or salts. You should also follow the sanitisation of your hands, the kitchen area, serving area and the equipment used to make sure that the food is safe.

Some food items that have honey should be avoided as honey contains bacterial spores that could lead to life-threatening illnesses like infant botulism. Similarly, fluid cow’s milk should not be introduced before the baby turns at least one year of age. Some babies may also have allergic reactions to sour items like oranges, strawberries, pineapple, and tomatoes and should be avoided.

Experts suggest and baby food can manufacturers in India also agree that any new food should be introduced one food at a time. Between these introductions, one should wait for a few days to check if there has not been any reaction to the introduced food like vomit, diarrhea, irritability, rashes, breathing difficulty or stomach pain. In case of an emergency, one should not wait but call up the doctor.
